Joanna Ling
"If it’s an all male board of directors,
people assume I’m the secretary" Women are often so used to blending into the background that over time we just accept it, when we shouldn't. I spoke to Joanna as she paints us a picture of all the expectations society directly/indirectly inflicts upon us women. (Yoga & gym-ing 4 times a week?) Ultimately, she ends it on a note that I resonate deeply with. Maybe we don't know what we want... and that's a good thing; Because the opportunities for women now are endless. FAQ: What is this project about? This project is to discover through conversation what women (and men) care about regarding this topic. Be it their take on gender equality or who should pay on the first date etc. Read more about it here: http://www.soolproductions.com Why this project? Maybe it's our culture and our background, but people generally just don't talk about these things enough. In a generation with so much access to mass communication, we ironically don't communicate much. So this project is to encourage our society and community to start talking about things that do matter. How you can be a part of it? Lulu
It's rare to find a female head chef in a very much male dominated industry like culinary. Which is strange because aren't women suppose to be in the kitchen? Here's Lulu, a south African girl, brought up in New Zealand; and now all the way in our small town of Kuching pioneering some exciting food and living her dreams. She shares a little of what encouraged her to pursue her career and why we shouldn't compare ourselves to others. FAQ: What is this project about? Lloyd & Sereni
" I'm not the kind of woman that would sit around and wait for men. If you want something, just go and get it." This inspiring couple taught me that there is beauty in the unconventional. There's nothing more respectful than a man that can also support the family by being there for his children; and a women that can take on the world (even in heels). We laughed about who made the move first and don't miss Lloyd final piece of advice. I giggled a bit too much. FAQ: What is this project about? In conjunction with The "What Women Want Weekend" at The Granary Kitchen + Bar this weekend, I've decided to plan a little project to discover through conversation what women (and men) care about regarding this topic. Be it their take on gender equality or who should pay on the first date etc. Read more about it here: http://www.soolproductions.com Why this project? The actual social experiment will be on the 12th of March, from 3.30-5.30pm at The Granary Kitchen + Bar. I will be giving out surveys as well as talking/filming willing participants. If you feel strongly about this topic, please head on down and we can all chat together. Plus it's free! (The event is ultimately for girls, but guys if you wanna share too you are more than welcomed) Others? Any other questions, or if you want to get involved; email me at soolxproductions@gmail.com
Jodie
(Dear men) "Support your women, celebrate her successes. Don't be intimidated by her, because you too have your own strengths." I've always known Jodie as the lady with a heart of gold, her work with the Sarawak Children's Cancer Society is no little feat. From Go Bald to Colour Rush, learn more about how you can support SCCS here. We talked about how hard it is to actually "be ourselves"; why women (and women) should be allowed to cry without judgement and exactly what role does money play in relationships. Ben Sim
A guy's perspective. It was refreshing hearing Ben's opinions on gender equality and how he feels society perceives women in today's context. We chatted about the role or girls AND guys in relationship, what exactly does it mean to be intimidating and of course how social media affects us all (MEN AND WOMEN) Being a basketball player, Ben also shed some light on why there seems to be more people interested in men's sports as compared to women.
